When you have facial pain, simply smiling, talking, or eating can be difficult. Many different conditions can cause facial pain, from temporomandibular joint disorder to complex nerve disorders. Nerve pain, atypical facial pain, or trigeminal neuralgia occurs when a blood vessel at the base of the skull exerts pressure directly on the nerve caused by either trauma to the nerve, multiple sclerosis, or a tumor compressing the nerve.
The type of pain also varies in each person. Some may have acute, severe pain, and others may experience chronic or constant pain but with less intensity. Facial pain is often described as shooting, stabbing, or electrical shock-like pain. Still, others may have constant aching or burning sensations in the cheek, lips, mouth, eyes, or forehead.

I was hesitant to go to pain management even though I should’ve done this two years ago. I survived a gunshot to the head and I have nerve damage so I have extreme pain almost all the time my provider.Lesley Is incredible. She is so empathetic and understanding we haven’t found the right one just yet but I think we’re pretty close. She never judges. She is never insinuated that I’m a drug seeker or anything like that. She’s dealt with prior authorizations and everything else to get Me in a good spot. She is by far my favorite practitioner.
